Listening to Sounds

Kiaora whanau
We have been learning to listen and identify sounds that we can hear. Everyday we practise using our ears to listen to sounds. We started off with listening to environmental sounds, then later moved on to listening to rhyming words from our poems and now we are learning how to listen to sounds made through body percussion. This week we had Joslin and Kim come to teach us different ways to listen. Learning is so much fun. Listening can be very challenging so we are still practising really hard.

In Week 7 we learnt to weave using a portrait of ourselves. We learnt to follow a pattern and to make sure that our strips were the same size. Some of us found this a challenge but we all gave it a go.
Here are some photos of us giving it a go.

Thank - you Whaea Sonia and to the rest of the support staff for coming to school every day and for looking after us.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Keep your identity alive to thrive

Talofa Lava,
Samoan Language week was celebrated not only in our class but also at our school.
In our class we have 6 Samoan students who were really helpful throughout the week. We taught the Fledglings team the song, "Vaai i le pepe", which is a song about a butterfly. During the week we had rotations where we got to meet our other class mates and teachers from our team. We enjoyed making our feelers, butterflies, weaving and making a 'ili' (Samoan fan).

Our challenge for the week was to introduce ourselves in Samoan. We tried our very best.

Here are some of the highlights from the week.

Activ8 with Incredible Two's

Kia Ora whanau,

We have Counties Manukau who come in every Tuesday's to run a programme called Activ8 for our Junior Team. This term we will be learning about Rippa Rugby. We started learning the skill of ripping tags off each other and seeing how it feels. It was really exciting. We look forward to it every week. Check out how active we are. Thank you Coach Gafa. See you next week.

Our Journey to the Past

Fakaalofa Lahi atu family and friends,

This term our inquiry is 'Where we are in Place and Time'. The Incredible Two's along with the rest of the Fledglings team got to go on a journey to the past. We visited the Howick Historical Village where we had an experience of how people in New Zealand lived in the colonial days from the 1800's.

We went to the old school house where we curtsied and bowed to the teacher. We sat at old wooden desks and wrote on slates. We made butter with Mrs white and even got to taste it on a cracker. We learnt about the olden day toys and got to experience washing using a washboard. There was a lot to see including some household items that the colonial people used which you wouldn't see in most of our houses today.

Our class inquiry question is 'How have our clothes and transport changed overtime?'

Thank you to all our parent helpers who came along, we couldn't have gone on this trip without your support.

Take a look at our journey to the past...please leave us a comment below.
Fakaaue Lahi (Thank you)

Miss Manuele teaching us differently

Welcome to Term 2 family and friends,

During the school holiday, Miss Manuele went on a course with Yolanda Soryl where she learnt some new ways of how to teach Phonics using a Whiteboard. Our sound for the day is 'l, l, l'. Our word for today is 'like'. Here you will see us using the word in a sentence.  Our vocabulary is 'phoneme'. Do you know what it means?

Today we learnt how to say, spell and write the word 'like'. We also learnt how to check our work by looking at our teachers whiteboard and giving ourselves ticks. If it didn't look the same as Miss Manuele's then we had to rub off a tick. We had so much fun and guess what? We learnt to spell the word 'like'.

Keep checking our blog to see how fun learning is in our class.
Whole Class Writing Lesson.
Learning to read out loud what we had written.
Checking our work by ticking: started with a capital letter, end with a full stop and spaces between words.
As we wrote we had to say our words out loud.
Every time we said the word 'like' we had to spell it out loud and write the letters down at the same time.
